Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which affects more than 170 million women worldwide, will now be recognized by a new name in the medical field: Polyen odocrine Metabolic Ovary Syndrome (PMOS).
Medianews.az reports that the decision was made after a comprehensive study published in 2026 in "The Lancet" journal, involving 56 international organizations.
Experts state that the name "PCOS" was changed because it does not fully reflect the nature of the disease.
The new name expresses the broader scope of the disease’s impact: the hormonal system, metabolism, and ovarian functions.
According to the explanation of PMOS, this syndrome is not limited to the ovaries only but also affects hormonal and metabolic systems, is associated with insulin resistance, weight gain, and other health problems.
