UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed French diplomat Jean Arnault as his personal envoy for the Middle East conflict.
Medianews.az reports, citing "Report," that the UN Secretary-General said this to journalists at the UN headquarters in New York.
Guterres believes that the situation in the region has gotten out of control and the world is on the brink of a larger war. He stated that he is in close contact with the Middle East and many countries around the world to promote dialogue and implement a series of initiatives to achieve peace.
"These initiatives must be successful. The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz obstructs the transport of oil, gas, and fertilizer at a critical moment in the global planting season. It is time to stop escalating and move towards diplomacy," he said.
According to the UN, Jean Arnault has more than 30 years of experience in international diplomacy, specializing in peacekeeping and mediation, and has served in UN missions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Previously, he worked as the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan and regional issues.
