The world's smallest settlement: There is only one house and one tree on the island

With a total area of just 310 square meters, just a little larger than a tennis court, the island named Just Room Enough carries the title of the world's smallest inhabited place with a single house and a tree on it.

According to Milli.Az, located on the Saint Lawrence River at the border between the state of New York and the Ontario region of Canada, this island is also known locally as "Hub Island." Although the chain consists of a total of 1,864 islands, and many small patches of land, Just Room Enough is the smallest spot inhabited by people.

The story of the island begins in the 1950s when the wealthy Sizeland family purchased this tiny piece of land seeking silence and solitude. The family carefully measured every inch of the island and built a small cottage, planting a tree beside it. However, their isolation dreams were dashed as tourists flocked to the area by boat to see this unusual building.

The most notable feature of the island is the mathematically precise usage of its borders. This microscopic area accommodates only one house, one tree, two bushes, and a small "beach" that varies depending on the water level. The house walls almost merge with the river waters, offering the residents the experience of sitting right on the riverbank instead of on a porch.

Just Room Enough officially gained the title of "The world's smallest inhabited place" in 1982. This record previously belonged to Bishop Rock Island in England. However, with the automation of the lighthouse there and the cessation of human habitation, the title changed hands. Currently, this island is registered as the smallest landmass capable of remaining above water year-round and having active habitation.
