The US Treasury is preparing a design for a new $250 bill featuring a photo of President Donald Trump.
The information was disclosed by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
According to him, Congress must amend existing legislation for the issuance of the bill.
Bessent noted that current regulations prohibit the use of portraits of living people on currency, but a draft bill providing an exception for a commemorative series celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States at Capitol Hill is under consideration. The document was introduced by Republican Congressman Joe Wilson and has been with the House Financial Services Committee since February 2025. Bessent emphasized that the Treasury is taking proactive steps but will strictly adhere to the law.
According to an NBC News report from Wilson’s representative, the congressman discussed the progress of the bill with Committee Chair French Hill and received support from both the Treasury and the White House. Republican sources note that the document has received preliminary approval for hearings.
