In recent days, the weather in Azerbaijan has been unstable; rainy and windy weather does not give the feeling of the spring season. Such variable weather also affects people's daily lives, especially those working outdoors and agriculture. Many people on social networks also express their dissatisfaction with the coldness of May. So, is the delay in the spring season this year related to climate change, or is it a temporary weather anomaly?
In his statement to Medianews.az on the subject, ecologist Məhərrəm Mehdiyev said that climate change plays an important role and causes various changes in the atmosphere.
According to him, however, it may not always be correct to relate these events only to climate change:
“Because there are many natural processes: volcanic eruptions, events like El Niño and La Niña also affect this. These factors generally influence atmospheric and climate processes. Climate change is a complex process and is mainly characterized by a gradual increase in the average annual temperature. This does not mean, for example, that if the highest temperature was 41 degrees in 2020, in 2025 or 2026 there will necessarily be a lower or higher indicator.”
The ecologist noted that climate change requires a comprehensive approach in this regard:
“Here, not only greenhouse gases or the El Niño event, but volcanic eruptions and other natural factors should also be considered together.
As for this year's spring season, it is assumed that as a result of the influence of all these factors, the weather has formed this way. It is possible that the spring season will not pass as expected, and we will transition directly to summer temperatures without fully feeling spring. For example, a sharp rise in temperature and the start of summer conditions after June 15 is possible.”
