How can Erdoğan be a candidate again?

In Turkey, extraordinary presidential and parliamentary elections occasionally come to the agenda.

Medianews.az reports that according to the country's constitution, presidential and parliamentary elections are held on the same day every five years. The last double election took place on May 14, 2023, the parliament was formed, and the presidential election ended in the second round on May 28.

The 600-seat parliament - the Grand National Assembly of Turkey - has the right to decide on extraordinary elections with 360 votes. In this case, the double election procedure must be applied.

The legislative body currently has 592 members.

9 deputies are independent.

The Justice and Development Party is represented by 275 seats, and its ally - the Nationalist Movement Party - by 46 seats.

The Republican People's Party holds 138 seats.

The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party has 56 seats, the Good Party 30, and the New Path Party, formed as a faction by the Democracy and Leap, Future and Felicity parties, in total 21; the Free Cause Party has 4, the Re-Welfare Party 4, the Turkey Workers' Party 3, the Democratic Regions Party 2, the Labor Party 2, the Democratic Party 1, and the Democratic Left Party 1 seat.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, chairman of the Justice and Development Party, has served as prime minister since 2003 and was elected president in 2014, 2018, and 2023.

Since 2018, the president is also the head of government. No one can be elected president more than twice. This limitation has been counted since 2018, so Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received his presidential mandate again in 2023. If the Grand National Assembly of Turkey decides on extraordinary elections with 360 votes, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan may run for the presidency again.
