Forces entering the election race in Armenia

Armenia's Central Election Commission has registered 17 political parties and 2 blocs participating in the parliamentary election to be held on June 7.

According to Medianews.az, the list was formalized on May 3.

To enter the parliament formed by proportional system, parties must gather 4 percent of valid votes, and blocs must gather 8 percent. The political force that obtains 54 percent of the mandates gains the right to form the government.

In the legislative body consisting of at least 101 members, no force can obtain more than two-thirds of the mandates.

The following parties participating in the election race do not seem very likely to succeed: Reformists; Democrat; Meritocratic; National Democratic Pole; National Revival; Christian Democrat; Centrist Progressive; Democratic Consolidation; Democracy, Law, Discipline; Republic.

The leading candidate on the list of the ruling Civil Contract Party is Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Nikol Pashinyan, born in 1975, founded the Civil Contract Party in 2013. In 2017, the "Way Out" bloc, which included this organization as well as the Bright Armenia and Republic parties, won 9 seats in the parliament.

Since March 31, 2018, Nikol Pashinyan has led a popular movement against President Serzh Sargsyan’s intention to become prime minister. On April 9, Serzh Sargsyan’s presidential powers ended. That day, as the country transitioned to a parliamentary form of government, executive power was transferred to the prime minister. On April 17, Serzh Sargsyan took the prime minister’s seat, but on April 23, unable to withstand public protests, he resigned.

From May 8, Nikol Pashinyan assumed the post of prime minister.

The early parliamentary elections held on December 9 of that year were won by Nikol Pashinyan’s "My Step" bloc; the early parliamentary elections on June 20, 2021 were won by the Civil Contract Party.

The Strong Armenia bloc includes three parties. The leading force is the Strong Armenia Party, led by Samvel Karapetyan. Born in 1965, Samvel Karapetyan is a businessman operating in Russia. In June 2025, he was arrested on charges of calling for a forceful seizure of power; in December, he was released under house arrest. The Strong Armenia Party was founded in January 2026.

Robert Kocharyan leads the list of candidates of the Armenia bloc, which comprises two parties. Born in 1954, Robert Kocharyan headed the occupying regime in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region from 1992 to 1997. He was appointed prime minister of Armenia in March 1997. In February 1998, President Levon Ter-Petrosyan resigned. Starting as acting president, Robert Kocharyan was elected head of state in 1998 and 2003.

Gagik Sarukyan leads the list of the Bright Armenia Party. Born in 1956, Gagik Sarukyan is a businessman. He founded the Bright Armenia Party in 2004. He was elected as a parliament deputy in 2003, 2007, 2012, 2017, and 2018.

Levon Zurabyan leads the list of the Armenian National Congress Party. The leader of this party is former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Born in 1945, Levon Ter-Petrosyan was the head of state of Armenia from 1990 and served as president between 1991 and 1998.

Born in 1964, Levon Zurabyan served as assistant to the head of state and press secretary during Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s presidency, and was a parliament deputy from 2012 to 2017.

The Bright Armenia Party has its chair Edmon Marukyan at the forefront of its list. Born in 1981, Edmon Marukyan was elected parliament deputy in 2012, 2017, and 2018. In the 2017 election, he gained a mandate from the "Way Out" bloc, which included the party of the current prime minister Nikol Pashinyan. For a time, Edmon Marukyan, known as a close ally of Nikol Pashinyan, served as an ambassador on special assignment from 2022 to 2024.

Aram Sargsyan is the leader and first on the list of the Republic Party. Born in 1961, Aram Sargsyan was prime minister of the country from 1999 to 2000.

Ayk Marutyan leads the list of the New Force Party. Born in 1976, Ayk Marutyan was mayor of the capital Yerevan from 2018 to 2021. He was also known for a time as a close ally of Nikol Pashinyan.

Arman Tatoyan heads the list of the Wing of Unity Party. Born in 1981, Arman Tatoyan held the office of ombudsman from 2016 to 2022.

The current parliament, elected in 2021, consists of 107 members. The Civil Contract Party holds 69 seats, the Armenia bloc affiliated with Robert Kocharyan has 27, the "Proud" bloc affiliated with former president Serzh Sargsyan holds 6 mandates. Four deputies are non-partisan.
