In recent years, the increase in cases of infidelity in relationships has been frequently discussed. According to some claims, after women became more actively involved in the workforce, an increase in this indicator was observed. It is also noted that until the mid-20th century, cases of infidelity among women were rarer, but now this ratio is almost at the same level as men. What are the main social and psychological factors influencing the increase in infidelity in relationships? At the same time, do social platforms have a role?
In her statement to Medianews.az on the topic, psychologist Dilruba Hasanova said that the main issue here is not that women work, but rather the overall change in people's lifestyle and mindset.
According to her, previously relationships were built more on obligation. Due to both economic and social reasons, people were forced to stay in relationships.
“Now there is a choice. As choices increase, the possibility of both leaving a relationship and seeking alternatives grows. On the other hand, in the modern era, people expect much more from relationships. Simply getting married is not enough anymore; emotional closeness, understanding, attention, and support come to the forefront. When these needs are not met, a person sometimes starts to seek them elsewhere.
There is also the issue that previously men's infidelity was accepted. Now, the boundaries are a bit blurred, and relationships are not regulated as before. At the same time, communication on social networks, messaging, emotional closeness are sometimes not considered infidelity but seriously affect the relationship.”
The psychologist noted that the role of social platforms in this matter is undeniable:
“People now have much easier access, it is easier to return to past relationships, and forming new acquaintances is very convenient. Moreover, the ideal life and relationship images on social networks can cause comparison and dissatisfaction in people. The problem is not only related to women working. It is more about social changes, the increase in emotional needs, communication problems in relationships, and the expansion of opportunities.
Infidelity is not only a cause but often the result of voids that arise in the relationship. If people recognize these problems in time and do not make emotional decisions, they can solve domestic difficulties on the spot and prevent serious consequences such as infidelity and divorce.”
