Ramiz Mehdiyev's speech from 1995 was released: Most of the scientists he mentioned are dead.

A video of a report made in 1995 by the former head of the Presidential Administration, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev, has been released.

Musavat.com reports that the report is dedicated to the discussions regarding the determination of the name of the mother tongue we use in Azerbaijan.

At that time, there were extensive debates in public and scientific circles surrounding the question "What should be the name of our language?" Various suggestions such as "Azerbaijani language," "Turkish language," "Azerbaijani Turkish language," and "Azerbaijani Turkic" were discussed.

In the released footage, Ramiz Mehdiyev reads a list reflecting the positions of scholars, writers, and other well-known intellectuals. He enumerates the names and explains which name each person gives preference to for our language. One of the notable points in the video is that the national leader Heydar Aliyev also participates in the meeting and leads the session.

During the speech, Ramiz Mehdiyev states that among the 27 scholars participating in the survey and discussions, 15 preferred retaining the name "Azerbaijani language." Thus, the main direction of the discussions held at that time and the state's position were formed.

Musavat.com, while presenting these images which are an important part of our history to its readers, notes that Ramiz Mehdiyev is currently in the agenda with various serious accusations. His name is associated with charges of treason against the state and other serious criminal allegations. It is reported that the former official is currently being held under house arrest.
