Eurostat, the statistical and forecasting agency of Europe, predicts that the total population in the European Union countries will decrease by 11.7 percent or up to 53 million people by the year 2100.
Medianews.az reports this according to the official press release from Eurostat.
The forecast notes that European countries will experience their peak population within the next 3 years, reaching 453.3 million. By the year 2100, the population is expected to decrease to 398.8 million.
In this scenario, the primary factor contributing to the population decline is indicated as the aging trend of the population.
According to the forecast, by 2100, the proportion of citizens aged 65 and older in the bloc will rise from 22 percent to 33 percent.//Trend
