In his speech at the opening ceremony of the XIII Global Baku Forum, President Ilham Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan is an indispensable partner along the East-West and North-South corridors and is the only country actively participating in and investing in both the Middle Corridor and the North-West Corridor.
Economist Vuqar Bayramov told Medianews.az that Azerbaijan is one of the countries contributing the most to the expansion of international transport corridors in the region: “This causes an increase in the volume of goods transported through the region, including Azerbaijan.”
So, how will the volume of goods transported through Azerbaijan change in 2025? How much economic dividend do freight transports bring to Azerbaijan?
In response to the question, V. Bayramov stated that in 2025, there was a sharp increase in the volume of goods transported via the South-West corridor through Azerbaijan: “In particular, if in 2024, 394.2 thousand tons of goods were transported through Azerbaijan via this corridor, this figure reached 533.6 thousand tons at the end of last year. This means a 35 percent increase in goods transported via the South-West corridor.
As the President of Azerbaijan mentioned in his speech, our country is an important partner along the East-West corridor. In 2025, the volume of goods transported via the East-West transport corridor was 16 million 909 thousand tons, including 8 million 173 thousand tons via the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor, 9 million 289 thousand tons via the North-South corridor, and 5 million 804 thousand tons via the North-West transport corridor. Despite global geopolitical threats, the volume of goods transported via the East-West transport corridor in 2025 compared to the previous year has maintained its stability.
The East-West transport corridor holds a larger share in the revenue Azerbaijan earns from freight transport: 324.4 million manats. Azerbaijan's revenue from freight transport is 128.7 million manats via the North-South corridor, 113.2 million manats via the North-West corridor, and 190.7 thousand manats via the South-West corridor.
This means that Azerbaijan's annual income from freight transport via transport corridors is 566.5 million manats. As can be seen, the income derived from international freight transportation forms a gradually special share in state budget revenues from the non-oil sector.”
