The British government plans to impose restrictions on donations made by people living abroad to political parties and to temporarily ban funding through cryptocurrency.
This decision is based on the results of an independent investigation into the influence of foreign funding on politics. The investigation was initiated after the arrest of a former member of the Reform UK party last year for taking a bribe in exchange for making pro-Russia statements.
According to the government's statement, donations from British citizens living abroad to political parties will be limited to £100,000 annually. At the same time, a moratorium will be applied on cryptocurrency donations until an effective regulatory mechanism is established.
It should be noted that last year the populist Reform UK party became the first British party to announce that it would accept donations via Bitcoin. It is reported that at least two-thirds of the funds raised by the party come from donors abroad.
