"Meat-eating bacteria" - What you need to know about the rapidly spreading deadly infection

The infection known as the "flesh-eating bacteria" attracts attention due to its rapid progression and severe consequences, although it is rarely encountered.

Medianews.az reports that if the disease is not treated in time, it can pose a life-threatening risk.

According to doctors, this infection destroys the subcutaneous connective tissues and muscles. The main cause is the entry of bacteria such as "Streptococcus pyogenes" or "Vibrio vulnificus" into the body through open wounds.

It is noted that the term "flesh-eating bacteria" is just a conventional name. The bacteria do not eat flesh; the toxins they secrete rapidly damage tissues, disrupt blood circulation, and cause tissue death.

The symptoms of the disease appear very quickly. The process, which starts as a small cut or scratch in the initial stage, is accompanied in a short time by severe pain, discoloration of the skin, high fever, nausea, and weakness. In some cases, a crackling sound can be heard when pressing the tissue due to the accumulation of subcutaneous air.

Experts state that although it is rare in healthy individuals, diabetic patients, those with weak immune systems, and individuals with open wounds are at higher risk. Also, tattoos and piercings performed in non-sterile conditions, animal bites, and post-surgical wounds can create the conditions for infection.

One notable point is that some bacteria live in seawater. Entering the sea with an open wound or consuming raw seafood can sometimes cause severe infections.

Doctors advise the public that even small wounds should not be neglected, should be cleaned with soapy water, and covered. It is important to avoid pools and the sea when there is an open wound and to be cautious when consuming raw seafood.

It is recommended to immediately consult a doctor as soon as symptoms are noticed./Milli.az
