Fandom and FOMO: Why is the fear of missing out increasing?

Experts state that fandom and "FOMO" (fear of missing out) are closely related psychological phenomena and have become even stronger especially in the era of social media.

Medianews.az reports that according to research, people form "parasocial relationships" with their favorite celebrities, music bands, and sports teams.

This is a one-sided emotional attachment and creates a strong sense of belonging in fans. Although this attachment sometimes creates motivation and social activity, when excessive it can turn into emotional dependency.

At the same time, "FOMO" is the anxiety people experience from the feeling that others are living through more interesting events without missing out. Social networks further reinforce this feeling, creating a constant need for users to stay online. While this provides short-term comfort, it can lead to long-term anxiety and dependence on social media.

Studies show that people with FOMO use social networks more, which weakens real communication and can reduce relationships and life satisfaction. It is also associated with problems such as decreased self-confidence, depression, and social isolation.

Experts note that parasocial relationships and FOMO originate from the human need to "belong." However, when this feeling gets out of control, it can cause psychological stress.

According to research, distancing from social media, developing mindfulness habits, and strengthening real social connections can reduce the negative effects of FOMO.
