Smoking during pregnancy: Poses a deadly threat to the baby

Smoking during pregnancy poses a serious risk to the health of both the mother and the baby. Experts state that nicotine and carbon monoxide pass through the placenta to the fetus, causing oxygen and nutrient deficiencies, which in turn lead to developmental delays.

Medianews.az reports that Professor Faruk Buyru, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, spoke to Anadolu Agency about this matter.

The professor noted that smoking negatively affects reproductive health in both women and men. According to him, smoking increases the risk of pregnancy complications, miscarriage, premature birth, and low birth weight babies, and can also lead to blood pressure problems in the mother.

The doctor emphasized that quitting smoking at any stage has positive results. Being in an environment where smoking occurs, including the use of electronic cigarettes, is also harmful during pregnancy.

Experts warn that smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unacceptable. Nicotine passes into breast milk and can cause agitation, sleep disturbances, and developmental problems in the baby. It is recommended that those wishing to quit smoking seek professional medical support.
