Breaking the fast with dates or water which one is more beneficial?

One of the topics discussed at the iftar table during Ramadan is how to break the fast.

The main question that many people wonder about is: is it more beneficial to break the fast with dates first, or is drinking water more appropriate?

Medianews.az reports, citing BAKU.WS, that according to Islamic tradition, breaking the fast with dates is recommended. If dates are not available, breaking the fast with water is advised.

This approach is mentioned both in religious sources and is considered appropriate from a practical standpoint.

Experts state that after long-term hunger and thirst, the body’s first need is liquid. Therefore, drinking a few sips of water helps to restore the body’s water balance and gently activates the digestive system.

On the other hand, dates are a natural source of sugar. Thanks to the glucose and fructose they contain, they provide energy in a short time. At the same time, they are rich in beneficial substances such as fiber, potassium, and magnesium.

What is the most suitable choice?

According to doctors, the most optimal option is to first drink a few sips of water, then eat 1-3 dates. This method both eliminates the body’s thirst and quickly restores the energy balance.

Experts emphasize that starting the iftar with heavy and fatty foods is not appropriate. Breaking the fast in a light and balanced manner is more purposeful both for protecting the digestive system and for general health.

Thus, both religious tradition and medical recommendations indicate that the combined use of water and dates is the most beneficial choice for iftar.
