Australia against social media companies tightens the penalties

The Australian government is preparing to double the fines applied to social media platforms that do not comply with the rules regarding users under 16 years old.

According to Medianews.az, citing foreign media, under the new bill, the maximum fine amount for companies that violate the rules will be increased from 49.5 million Australian dollars to 99 million Australian dollars.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that big tech companies are not taking enough steps to prevent children from using social media accounts.

According to the bill, Australia's online safety commissioner will be able to demand evidence from social media platforms on how age restrictions are implemented.

It should be noted that the law restricting the use of social networks by persons under 16 years of age in Australia came into force in December 2025. According to government data, since then, more than 5 million accounts have been deleted or blocked.
