There are 175 Azerbaijani citizens serving prison sentences in Georgia.
The National Statistics Office of Georgia reports that the number of foreign citizens in the country's prisons has increased 3.3 times compared to 2021, reaching 1,762 as of May 1, 2026.
Azerbaijani citizens are also included in the statistics of foreigners held in prisons in the neighboring country. Currently, the number of Azerbaijani citizens serving sentences there is 175. For comparison, this number was 103 in 2021.
According to the statistics, the leaders in terms of the number of foreign prisoners are as follows:
Turkey: 539 people (140 in 2021)
Russia: 196 people (more than 77)
Ukraine: 176 people (more than 36)
Azerbaijan: 175 people (more than 103)
Iran: 100 people (more than 28)
According to the information, out of 1,762 foreign prisoners, 1,182 are already serving sentences based on issued verdicts, while the rest are awaiting trial. According to Georgian legislation, after the sentence term is completed, foreigners must leave the country, and their return can be banned for up to 20 years.
Currently, the Georgian parliament is discussing new legislative amendments regarding the deportation of conditionally released foreigners. It should be noted that as of May 1, 2026, 697 foreign citizens have been given conditional sentences./Modern.az
