The arrival of spring motivates people to spend more time in nature. However, some people contract various allergic diseases while in nature during the spring months. Although these diseases are seasonal, they can turn people's lives into hell.
Medianews.az reports that allergist Aysel Mehdiyeva, speaking to Bizim.Media on the subject, stated that one of the most effective measures against spring allergies is to spend less time outdoors during the early morning hours (05:00–10:00).
“Because during these hours there is a lot of pollen in the air. Wearing sunglasses and a mask helps protect against allergies. Wash your face as soon as you get home, and if possible, take a shower. Change the clothes you wore outdoors at home. Keep windows closed at home, especially on windy days. If you have an air conditioner, clean its filter frequently. Do damp cleaning at home 2–3 times a week.
Minimize dust-collecting carpets and heavy curtains, and make good use of air purifiers. Nasal rinsing with saline solution (available at pharmacies as ‘sea water spray’) is highly effective. Allergy drops (for example, antihistamine eye drops) are used when necessary.”
Food factor
The allergist believes that some foods can increase allergies:
“If there is an allergy to tree pollen, then consuming apples, pears, or hazelnuts can sometimes trigger a reaction. Nevertheless, foods rich in antioxidants - pomegranate, citrus fruits, green vegetables - are very beneficial. At the same time, if the allergy is strong, antihistamine tablets and nasal sprays (corticosteroids) recommended by a doctor are the best remedies. It is better to start this treatment 1–2 weeks before the season begins.”
