The Central Election Commission of Russia has scheduled the next election to the Federal Assembly (parliament) lower house – the State Duma for September 20.
Medianews.az reports that the 450-seat Duma elects 225 members by proportional representation (by party lists) and 225 members by majoritarian system (constituencies).
In the lower house, whose term is five years, the ruling United Russia Party holds 314 seats, the Communist Party 56, the A Just Russia Party 28, the Liberal Democratic Party 22, and the New People Party 15 seats.
3 seats are held by independents, 12 seats are vacant.
According to the Russian Constitution, the State Duma appoints the prime minister, deputy prime ministers, and federal ministers upon the president’s nomination.
The upper house – the Federation Council – includes 2 representatives from each subject of the country as well as individuals appointed by the president.
