Experts have explained why human tears have a salty taste and why in some cases they appear thicker, causing irritation in the eyes and skin.
Medianews.az reports that, according to experts, although tears mainly consist of water, they also contain various mineral substances, especially sodium chloride, which is ordinary table salt.
The main component that gives tears their characteristic salty taste is precisely this. Experts state that the concentration of salt in tear fluid is close to the level found in other bodily fluids, including blood and saliva. Under normal conditions, this indicator is not high enough to cause discomfort.
In addition to salt, tears contain other important substances. One of them is the enzyme lysozyme, which provides a protective effect against bacteria and supports the natural defense of the eye's mucous membrane.
Scientists remind that tears differ in composition and function. Basal tears constantly moisten the surface of the eye, reflex tears help clear irritants from the eye, and emotional tears arise as a result of strong feelings and psychological reactions.
It is precisely emotional tears that can sometimes taste saltier and even slightly bitter. The reason for this is the body's reaction to stress. During intense emotional states, the heart rate accelerates and the levels of various hormones, including adrenaline, increase, which can cause temporary changes in the chemical composition of the tear fluid.
Experts believe that during strong emotional shocks, tears can indeed become more concentrated. In some cases, this condition causes mild irritation in the eyes and facial skin.
Experts emphasize that this type of reaction is part of the body's natural response to emotional stress. Therefore, during intense crying, a person can experience not only the salty taste of tears but also a burning sensation and certain discomfort.//Lent.az
