Iran stores unsold oil in old tankers stored in tankers

Iran's oil sector is facing serious difficulties. Due to U.S. sanctions and maritime blockade, export opportunities have been limited, but production cannot be stopped.

Medianews.az reports, referring to BAKU.WS, that reserves on Kharg Island, one of the country's main oil centers, have nearly reached their maximum limit. This island is used for processing and loading more than 90 percent of Iran's oil.

Under the current conditions, the Tehran government has started to reuse the "Nasha" tanker, which has been unused for many years, as a floating storage to create additional storage capacity.

According to experts' calculations, the country has only 13 million barrels of free storage capacity left. Considering that 1-1.1 million barrels of oil enter daily, it is expected that the current reserves will be completely filled within 12-13 days.

Experts indicate that if the storage locations become completely full, Iran will have to either sharply reduce production or accept the risk of irreversible damage in some fields. Especially in fields where water injection is applied, stopping production could cause long-term losses.

It is noted that the current situation poses serious risks to the Iranian economy and increases the likelihood of a crisis.
