Why is chewing gum dangerous for the stomach?

Doctors say that chewing gum increases the secretion of stomach acid. The body interprets this as preparation for food intake. If food is not consumed, the acid irritates the stomach lining. This can lead to gastritis and a burning sensation. Chewing gum on an empty stomach is especially dangerous because acid is secreted more actively at that time. Additionally, frequent chewing strain causes tension in the jaw muscles and may lead to headaches. Sugared gums damage tooth enamel. "Sugar-free" gums contain artificial sweeteners that can irritate the intestines.

Hidden risks

Some sweeteners can cause bloating and diarrhea because they are not fully digested. Chewing gum also tricks the brain by sending a fullness signal, but no real calories are consumed. This can later lead to overeating because the body tries to compensate for this "deception." Gum is only beneficial in certain situations, for example, to clean teeth after a meal. However, its constant habitual use is risky.
