Claims that chocolate causes acne are frequently voiced.
But how true is this, or is it just an excuse parents tell children who want sweets?
Medianews.az reports that according to Turkish dermatologist Dr. Zeynab Laftah, the majority of patients visiting the clinic ask which foods they should remove from their diet to reduce acne. Chocolate is one of the products that attracts the most interest.
The doctor noted that the primary role in the formation of acne belongs to genetic predisposition. However, some foods can increase inflammation in the body and worsen the condition. It is especially emphasized that some foods, like dairy products, create strong reactions in some people, and this may be related to allergies.
Research conducted on the subject has not yet provided definitive results. For example, a small-scale study conducted in 2011 observed that 100% dark chocolate increased acne, but the study was carried out on only 10 people and had no control group.
The relationship between acne and diet is mainly explained by the glycemic index of foods. Foods with a high glycemic index rapidly increase blood sugar, which leads to a rise in insulin levels, resulting in increased inflammation and excessive skin oiliness. This process causes the clogging of pores and the formation of acne.
However, the glycemic index of chocolate varies from low to medium level. Yet, chocolates high in sugar and fat content are considered to have a higher probability of affecting acne. Dark chocolate is regarded as less risky since it contains relatively less sugar.
It is reported that diet is not the sole factor in fighting acne, and each person's body may react differently to foods. Therefore, an individual approach is essential to determine the cause of the problem. (Milli.Az)
