The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed serious concern about the continued spread of the Ebola virus in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. According to recent data, the number of confirmed infections has reached 710, and the death toll is at least 149.
In the past 24 hours, 21 new cases of infection have been detected.
There are hundreds of patients in hospitals and isolation wards, and experts believe that the actual number of infections and deaths could be much higher than the official figures. To combat the rise in cases, the WHO and the country’s authorities have launched a large-scale program costing approximately 550 million dollars. The main goal is to prevent the spread of the infection, identify new cases, and protect the population.
93 percent of the infection cases have been recorded in Ituri province, but the virus continues to spread to other regions, including North and South Kivu. Cases have also been recorded in neighboring Uganda, where 19 infections and two deaths have been confirmed./AZERTAC
