Can Orban return to the prime minister position? – The constitutional amendment passed the parliament.

The prime ministerial term in Hungary is being limited.

Medianews.az reports that according to the constitutional amendment passed by parliament on June 16, no one can hold the position of prime minister for more than eight years in total.

The change applies to all individuals who have been prime minister since May 2, 1990.

Between 1990 and 2026, only one person has served as prime minister of Hungary for more than eight years: the leader of the Hungarian Civic Alliance, Viktor Orban. He served as prime minister from 1998 to 2002 and from 2010 to 2026.

In the parliamentary election held on April 12, the Honour and Freedom Party of Peter Macar won the right to form a government. On May 9, Peter Macar took the prime minister's seat.

In Hungary's 199-seat parliament, the Honour and Freedom Party is represented by 141 mandates.

The Hungarian Civic Alliance has 44 mandates, its ally the Christian Democratic People's Party has 8, and the Our Homeland Party has 6 mandates.

Peter Macar, born in 1981, was a member of the Hungarian Civic Alliance from 2002 to 2024. After parting ways with Viktor Orban, Peter Macar joined the Honour and Freedom Party and was elected leader of the organization on July 22, 2024.
