Former president on the path to government

The political force led by former president Rumen Radev wins the snap parliamentary election held in Bulgaria on April 19.

Medianews.az reports that according to preliminary results, the Progressive Bulgaria Party secures 131 mandates in the 240-member legislative body. 121 mandates are enough to form a government.

Rumen Radev, who was elected president in 2016 and 2021, resigned on January 19, 2026, and Vice-President Iliyana Yotova took the presidential seat on January 23.

In the Bulgarian parliament, elected by proportional representation (by party lists), it is expected that both the GERB Party and the Democratic Forces Alliance, as well as the bloc consisting of the Continuity for Reforms Party and the Democratic Bulgaria Party, will be represented with 39 mandates; the Movement for Rights and Freedoms with 18 mandates; and the Revival Party with 13 mandates.

The April 19 election is the eighth election since 2021. Three elections were held in 2021, one each in 2022 and 2023, and two in 2024, none of which have led to the formation of a stable government.
