Hobbies that reduce the risk of Alzheimer's – Research

Engaging in music, traveling, socializing with friends, and learning new skills in middle age can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Medianews.az reports that this was stated in a new study conducted by scientists from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland.

The study showed that hobbies that increase physical, social, and mental activity strengthen the brain's protective mechanisms and play an important role in preventing memory decline. According to the scientists, this effect is observed even in people with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease.

The study analyzed data from 587 people aged 40-59. Participants underwent various tests measuring memory, attention, and thinking abilities. Experts also took into account risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, sleep disorders, and head injuries.

According to the results, especially the mental indicators of people engaged in different activities were higher. Scientists state that the combined effect of several different hobbies creates a stronger protective effect than medical risk factors alone.

The study leader Lorina Nasi pointed out that evidence shows that brain health develops not only in old age but starting from middle age: “Social connections, physical activity, learning new skills, and mental activities can play an important role in preventing memory problems.”

During the study, it was also found that depression and head injuries are among the most dangerous factors for mental function. Experts believe that in the future, more attention should be paid to lifestyle-related programs to prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Currently, approximately 48 million people worldwide suffer from dementia. According to forecasts, this number could reach 150 million by 2050.
