Former U.S. President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama gave a joint interview to the "ABC News" channel.
Medianews.az reports that this is the couple's first joint televised interview since Barack Obama left the presidency in 2017.
In the interview, they talked about the newly opened Obama Presidential Center and their days in the White House.
The main goal of the Obama Presidential Center is to support the development of young leaders. Located in Chicago, the center includes a museum, halls for public events, a park, and a library.
The museum exhibition presents Obama's political rise, his famous messages, as well as the history of social movements in the U.S.
During the interview, Barack Obama said that since leaving the presidency, he tries to stay as far away as possible from socio-political discussions. He stated that he now sees himself not as an active political player but more as a mentor for the new generation.
According to the former president, his wife Michelle Obama also prefers to live a quieter life. At the same time, Barack Obama emphasized that there are those who want him to appear publicly every day and take an active stance on various issues.
Barack Obama cited the healthcare reform adopted in 2010 (Obamacare) as the greatest achievement of his administration and said that this law helped millions of people access medical services. He also emphasized that citizens' right to express their political will through free elections forms the foundation of a healthy democracy.
Michelle Obama spoke more about youth education and their role in society. She expressed confidence that the center will not just be a building recalling the past but a vibrant community and an engaging place for young people.
