The appellate complaint against the verdict concerning Royyal Taghiyev, accused of burning a woman to death in Tovuz, was reviewed at the Ganja Court of Appeals.
Medianews.az, citing Pravda.az, reports that a decision was announced at the last hearing.
According to the decision, the appellate complaint was dismissed.
It should be noted that Royyal Taghiyev did not admit guilt under the charge brought according to Article 126.3 of the Criminal Code (intentionally causing grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of the victim due to negligence).
In his statement, he assessed the incident as having occurred due to negligence and considered his act to fall under Article 124.1 of the Criminal Code (causing grievous bodily harm by negligence).
According to his statement, Royyal had been in a romantic relationship with the deceased Turkan Mammadova for nearly a year before the incident. He noted that a few days before the event, his father opposed this relationship and instructed him to end it. The accused stated that for this reason, he decided to end his relationship with Turkan: "That evening, when I called Turkan, I told her not to call me anymore and that I wanted to start a family life with someone else."
According to Royyal, on the day of the incident, Turkan Mammadova called him and said she wanted to meet one last time. The accused agreed, picked her up from her residence, and they went together to an area called “Asrik yolu.” A relative of the accused was also with them in the car.
Explaining the moment the incident occurred, Royyal said that after stopping the car, Turkan got out and moved to the side. He lit a cigarette in the car, and after a while, saw that she had poured gasoline on herself. He approached her to prevent this, but at that moment, the cigarette in his hand touched the gasoline, resulting in the fire.
According to the accused’s statement, after the incident, he and the person with him immediately intervened, extinguishing the fire using soil and transported the victim to the hospital. Royyal also mentioned that Turkan was given medicines at the hospital.
He emphasized that the incident was not intentional and said that Turkan Mammadova’s action was caused by the emotional state resulting from their breakup. The accused noted that before the incident, the victim insisted on not ending their relationship and even said she might harm herself.
Additionally, Royyal claimed that he was pressured during the preliminary investigation.
By the verdict of the Ganja Serious Crimes Court, Royyal Taghiyev was sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment.
