According to Robert Lawson, a sociologist at Birmingham City University, humor weakens the strict hierarchy within the family, turning fathers into people with whom children can communicate more closely and comfortably. This allows pressure-free and non-judgmental conversations between father and son.
The study notes that jokes and sincere humor not only strengthen family bonds but also positively affect the development of creativity and imagination in children. Experts believe that humor also helps normalize relationships after tense moments.
At the same time, the scientist warned that excessive joking can sometimes reduce the importance of topics that require serious attention.
Within the scope of the research, a survey was conducted among 500 fathers with sons aged 7-11. According to the results, 25 percent of the respondents stated that laughing together with their sons brought them closer to each other.
90 percent of the fathers participating in the survey said they strengthen their relationship with their children at least once a week through humor or play. 33 percent of them stated that they joke with their children every day.
The study also showed that 38 percent of fathers consider not being able to spend enough quality time with their sons one of the main challenges of parenthood. 54 percent of the respondents said they want to build a closer relationship with their children but do not know how to start.
63 percent of those participating in the survey expressed concern that their relationships with their children would weaken during adolescence.
