“At the psychiatric hospital in Mashtaga, patients suffering from manic schizophrenia, nervousness, and mental illnesses are treated. Even artists have stayed there. During my years of education, our great artist Fatma Mehraliyeva was also treated there. There are artists who, due to some injustice or working on a role, experienced nervousness. They would come and receive certain sedative treatments at the hospital, recover, and leave. This disease has both mild and severe forms. It depends on how the person experiences it.” This was stated to Medianews.az by the well-known doctor and physiologist Rashid Mahmudov.
He then mentioned that at certain periods, leeches were used in the treatment of mental illnesses:
“Mental patients were treated with leeches as early as the 17th century. Leeches dilated all the brain’s blood vessel capillaries. As a result, blood began to flow better in the brain vessels. Many people were completely healed after this treatment method. Leeches prevent blood clotting. There are rules to applying leeches. There are more than 120,000 enzymes in the leech’s mouth. Leeches even reduce the risk of infarction. At that time, noble families would even apply leeches before going to social gatherings. This should not be done arbitrarily. Usually, it is done for 7 weeks, then a break is given,” he said.
Rashid Mahmudov later also commented on reports about patients escaping from the No. 1 Republican Psychiatric Hospital in Mashtaga:
“Honestly, information has been spread on websites and social networks about this. I don’t know how accurate it is. If patients escaped from there, why were they brought to that extent? It is possible to calm these patients with treatment. There are many methods. They inject insulin into such people, lower their blood sugar, and as a result, the person enters a semi-coma state. Memory is completely lost. Then they inject glucose and revive them. They have special medications.”
It should be noted that a few days ago, news circulated on social media about patients escaping from treatment at the No. 1 Republican Psychiatric Hospital.
