Iranian human rights defender, Nobel Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced.

According to Medianews.az, on February 7, a court ruling in Mashhad sentenced Narges Mohammadi to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment.

Narges Mohammadi was sentenced to 6 years for the charge of "illegal assembly and conspiracy against the state," and 1 year and 6 months for "propaganda against the state." In addition, she has been banned from leaving the country for 2 years after her release.

According to the court decision, Narges Mohammadi will also be exiled within the country for 2 years. She will live her exile in a location approximately 740 kilometers southeast of Tehran.

The 53-year-old Narges Mohammadi, who has been working in human rights defense for many years, has been arrested 13 times to date, and received imprisonment sentences 5 times.

She has been detained again since December 2025. According to her supporters, Narges Mohammadi has been on a hunger strike since February 2, 2026, while in detention.

Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2023 for her activities in promoting women's rights as well as human rights and freedoms in Iran. She was in prison when she received this award.

Narges Mohammadi is the vice president of the Human Rights Defenders Center (HRDC) led by Iran's other Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi.
