Russia has started the construction of a new military base in the Republic of Karelia, near the village of Novaya Vilga close to Petrozavodsk, in the area near the Finnish border.
Medianews.az reports this based on statements from former Finnish intelligence officer Marko Eklund and analysis of satellite images.
Experts say the scale of the project is unprecedented for the region because until now, mainly the modernization and reconstruction of military facilities dating back to the Soviet era have been carried out in this area.
Based on satellite image analysis, preparation of the construction site began at the end of 2025. The first tree clearings were recorded in November, and large-scale earthworks commenced during the winter season.
According to Finnish observers’ assessment, the new garrison could become one of the largest military facilities Russia has built near the Finnish border in recent decades. / Konkret.az
